hi,
2 days ago, i had noticed that nortons was running live update quite a
lot. So i decided to see what ws going on on my system. i double
clicked the desktop icon and nothing happened for a while, then i get
an error meassage saying that some file and setting s had been changed
and for security reasons has to shut down and restart. I thought this
to be very strangem but i let it restart.
upon restarting, the same message appeared again. i ignored it for the
time being, to see if i could get an update from live update, which i
did, virus definitions and client update. i downloaded them and
restarted, but i still got the same error, this time. i however, this
time followed the link to the symantec web site, which took forever to
load up and actually did crap all to help me. saying best thing to do
was to uninstall and then re install. So i followed what they
suggested and still made no impact. Error message still appears.
I thought, maybe if i go to windows update, that might help, only to
be greeted with the error message that everyone else has seemed to
receoived about ACTIVEX controls. I have never fiddled with these
controls, so why would they have been changed?? i didn't know, but i
went into IE tools and made sure they were enabled and cleared my
tempory internet files, cookies and history, just as the methods i
have found in other groups.
I then went back to update siet and still had no success. i eventually
came across a webiste that kind of shed some light on to the problem
http://www.computerworld.com/securitytopics/security/holes/story/0,10801,86099,00.html
this website linked me to the critical patches that i most likely
needed. I yet again downlaoded them and once i tried to install them,
yet again another error message appears.
"setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf. Make
sure the Cryptographic services are running on this computer"
I made sure through the methods i had read in other group messages. it
amongst others were already set to automatic and i restarted them all,
including remote procedure call or whatever it was, and something
about background installer. Anyways, i stopped them and restarted them
all.
I once again, tried to get the automatic updates and still ended up
with the same error screen.
I though, maybe the error with Nortons may have something to do with
the error. so i unistalled it and restarted to makew sure it was
deleted. I then tried to get the windows updates and i seemed to take
a step backwards!! all i got was a blank white screen of death !!!! in
the status bar of IE it just says "done" and nothing happens.
So i really need some guidance, becasue i am tearing my hair out over
this problem. I am sure i am open to all kinds of hacks right now,
becasue all that i have running a plain firewall from windows.
And yes, i have tried all the above with the firewall disabled, made
no difference.
Any help would BE REALLY REALLY APPRECIATED !!!
thanks
