In addition to the stuff about Red X in the FAQ you were referred to, later
versions of PPT do now use the same red x icon for missing linked pictures
as for other display problems (they used to be different, which was, IMO,
more useful in identifying the problem).
Which answers your question long way 'round: you can link to external
picture files. And if you do, it's nearly a sure thing that the links will
break if you move the PPT file hither and yon.
