Is there a way to white balance photo's by picking an area in a photo (e.g.
with a color picker) which is supposed to be white and use this reference
to correct the WB bij making equal RGB components (or zero a and b in an Lab
colorspace) for the ref color and adjust all other RGB values in the photo
with the same ratio?

Yes, this a common procedure with image editing software.
Do you have such software or do you need a recommendation? You can get
Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006 pretty cheap if you look around and it
will do this nicely. Same with Photoshop Elements 4 (quite cheap) or the
newer 5 (a little more expensive).

But I would try some free software first and see if this could do the job:

Thanks Yves. In fact I have PS7.0 and PS Elements 3.0, but I cann't find out
how to do this WB correction the way I described. Suppose I pick an area
which is to become white. What do I do next, in order to make this area
white and correct all other colors the same way?

In PSE 3.0, it will be under:
Enhance
Levels
Click on the dropper "Set White Points"
Then click on a white area of the picture.

Thanks. I got it !
