Hi,

My laptop has been doing strange things for a while now and I need help to
stop the inconvenient crashing.

Every now and again, its sounds like there is a motor whirring inside, first
at a low level then increasing until it is quite loud and high pitched. Then
the whole laptop crashes. I have to wait for about 15 minutes before it will
successfully restart.

Is it something to do with temperature?

Please advise!

Sounds like your cooling fan has "bit the dust".
Thanks for the response.
What can I do about it?

If you have to ask that question - you are better off taking it to a repair
shop.
Being a laptop - you were probably better off doing so originally anyway.

So I can walk into my local laptop repair shop confidently knowing it's a
cooling fan thing?

No.
That's the point.

You are not qualified *and* without looking at it, no one here could tell
you with 100% certainty what the problem was.

Additional info. By continued use you may have done additional damage
to your laptop. Just your cooling fan may not be the only problem. To
get an idea of the prices, look at the website below. Take the laptop to
a reputable PC repair shop, you'll incur a labor charge of at least $30.00
including the parts (cooling fan). If the laptop is still under warranty you
may be off the hook, but don't wait.

It's quite possibly the sound of the fan failing, followed by silence as the
processor overheats, fails and the system shuts down. Such a process,
repeated, can easily destroy components to the point where it's best to
replace the unit.

Laptops aren't nearly as easy to service as desktops. Take it to a decent
service shop, tell them you think the fan failed, ask for an estimate. It
may be better to replace the laptop.
