Hi,

I'm trying to download the Whidbey preview from MSDN. It's around 2.6GB
in size. The computer that I'm using to perform the download is in a data
center with access to 10mbps of bandwidth, yet the download only seems to be
taking place at around 300kBps... Is this due to a bandwidth cap that MSFT
imposes? What kind of download speeds are you seeing?

I went in to work over the weekend to start a download. Whenever I download
anything from MSDN downloads, the download starts off slow and stays that
way for a considerable period of time and then whooosh, it goes super fast
at the end.

I started the download at about 2:00 PM Sunday. I putzed around work for a
while and only had two little squares in the progress bar when I went home.
Late that evening I brought up remote desktop to see how thing were going,
and the download had completed.

Remember that FTM bandwidth is shown in kilobytes per second, not kilobits.
300KB/sec is actually a pretty decent speed for downloads off of MSDN
Subscriber Downloads. For this release we are not throttling any servers
(we do occasionally for major launches), but due to the encryption and
packet level CRC checks we run there is a bit of overhead in FTM that tends
to slow downloads. We're working on an upgrade now to our fulfillment
servers that should increase throughput, especially in Europe and Asia.

I tried to download that the other night on a cable connection and was
getting download speeds of only 20-50kb. Do you have any idea when the
Whidbey beta will be released?

Consider yourself lucky then. I seldom get better speed than 50-70KBytes/s
from MSDN with my 10mbit fiber. It's not uncommon for me to get 1015KBytes/s
when downloading from other sites though.
