Hi!

I have a general question regarding building my first PC! It has an
AMD-64 X2 CPU with a 929 "socket." I will be using this PC mostly for
school work, and web browsing.

I noticed WinXP-SP2 64 on sale for $59 at NewEgg and a few other
retailers. Is this a good choice, and are there any hooks to this
version?

I was told not many manufacturers have 64 bit drivers on the market.
Because of this, standard XP-Pro SP2 should work fine. Is this true?

My four year old PC has XP-Home on it. I don't want to move the old
home version XP onto my new PC.

Can you guys make a suggestion of what version is adequate for now and
the near future, and a good place to buy a copy?

Thanks bunches,
Patty
XOXOXOX

Thank you for the reply. Do you know if the $59 XP-SP2-64 is a good
choice? Will I get hammered with ads for Symantec, AOL, etc... and
have to pay a new license fee in a year?

Thank you in advance!

As DL told you, there is a lack of drivers and applications for XP
64-bit. Hence, it is a *bad* choice. Buy a 32-bit version of XP
instead.

Symantec/AOL have nothing to do with a winxp installation cd

Often these apps, and other junk, or a trial version, are installed on New
PC's

Watchout for Upgrade versions. You must buy a full retail version for a new
computer.

I would return to NewEgg and read the product descriptions very carefully.
The cheapest that I saw was $139...

Depends what you want to use it for. There are few applications yet
which benefit from running on a 64-bit OS. Most 32-bit applications
will install and run fine (with some notable exceptions, including the
current Real Player and many virus scanners).

Sort of - the only hardware I own without x64 drivers are my webcam
(for which an unofficial driver is available) and my PDA - my graphics
cards, sound card, printer, camera, ipod etc all work fine with x64
drivers from the manufacturer.

Check your hardware - if anything you want to use doesn't have a
supported driver, 64-bit probably isn't for you yet.

That is a fact. 64-bit apps are also rare.

Sure.

This package gives you both Windows Vista and XP Pro or XP Home 32-bit.

That sounds like either an upgrade and/or an OEM
version. The latter is tied to specific hardware.
If you plan on upgrading or rebuilding later,
you're better off spending the $189 or so for the
full retail version.
