I have Norton Antivirus 2005 which seems to be doing its job well but I
will have to pay for another year very soon, so my friends think I
should ditch it and go for Avast which is free..
My question is - "Which would you use?"
Thanks in advance

I would not use either one. If malicious code is enough of a concern to
you to warrant having some sort of a software utility defense, look at this:

I'll second that, it seems flippant, but it is true NAV is terrible, as is
mcafee. If you want it free go with AVG free edition, if you want to pay try
nod32.

MAke sure your machine is clean though, by running this programme,

http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

it lets you run the programmes without all the shit that come with them, you
will be surprised what gets picked up.

Rather than pay Symantec, purchase NOD32. It updates pretty
much daily and sometimes more often. It uses much less
resources and there is competent and fast email tech support.
