Dear readers,

I am running XP home, SP 2 & 3. Through Start > Run > msconfig or through
Control Panel > system > services, it's very hard to figure out which Windows
services you really need & can be switched off, according your individual
customized/configured computer. It is my aim to keep my PC as basic (Windows
classic) & 'stripped down' as possible for I don't want all those bells &
whistles. Does somebody know a way, tool or information website for doing
this job? Does switching off a number of services really improve the PC (XP)
performance?

Thanks, Max.

Unless your sys is greviously short of ram the 'standard' MS installed
services are not going to impact on performance in any noticeble way

Thanks DL. I heard that before, namely that the impact of MS services is
minimal but that can be different for services related to other installed
software.

Max.

In very general terms its only certain types of software/hardware that
instals services, if in msconfig you select services tab, you can hide ms
services, to reveal the others.
Its then a matter of research as to whether disabling any of these would
impact on your software or hardware, eg Disabling an anti virus service
would leave you with a none functioning AV
