I have searched all the Vista info sites and get the message that I can
upgrade from my existing Windows 2000 Professional to an equivalent version
of Vista. However, nowhere does it say what this is? Is it Ultimate?
Business? Home Premium or what??????
I avoided the "upgrade" to XP because it's junk but I fear if I do not
upgade now I will get too far behind. Currently using a AMD processor with
equiv clock speed of 2.6 Mhz with 512Mb RAM and 120Gb HD

Windows 2000 Professional was primarily aimed at business, so it stands to
sense that any Vista version with 'Home' in the name is not going to be an
equivalent.. look to Business or Ultimate versions..

The Windows 2000 Pro would require the Business or Ultimate version of Vista
to do an in-place upgrade. Otherwise, with either of the "home" versions,
you would have to do a clean install (basically wiping out your current
Win2K install and starting over).

Also, I recommend upgrading to 2GB RAM (1 GB Minimum).

Also, since your machine is old enough to have been used with Win2000, your
hardware may not qualify for Vista. Check out the hardware for compatibility
and drivers before you attempt an upgrade.

Also also... If I were you, unless I was having some kind of problem with my
system, or needed certain Vista functionality, I would not attempt to
upgrade a box this old. I would purchase a new box.

To do an upgrade, you would need Ultimate or Business. If you want to do a
clean install, you can use anything. 2000 Professional supports domains,
among other things, and was aimed at businesses. Home & Home Premium don't
support domains, and are aimed at home users.

Your PC will run Vista fine, but I'd definitely recommend upping your RAM to
at least 1GB. 512 is minumum, and it is pretty slow!

If you check the matrix on the vista site this is not the case at all!! Seems
to me that MS are peddling multiple versions of their OSs and leaving the
user to sort out what they actually need by trial and error. That way we are
more likely to hedge our bets and buy the more expensive option because
previous versions do not relate to the new/latest product on offer!!!
