After experience with Java Script, CA-Realizer 3, Visual Basic 5, I am
going to write code in Borland Delphi. I am freelancer. Which version of
Delphi is the simplest and the best ? Where to buy "second hand" copy ?

Since this newsgroup is about freeware, I can strongly suggest that
you take a look at Lazarus:

http://lazarus.freepascal.org/

It's an open source library/IDE based on FreePascal that aims to
provide the same facilities as Delphi itself.

Wald

Ha! Is a half-dozen eggs "simpler" than a dozen?

None of them are really simpler than the rest. The part you see all works
the same way. The newer versions have more features than older versions,
but you can easily ignore features you do not presently wish to use. If you
are going to spend the big bucks, get the latest version. It does dot net,
and that may be very important in the near future.

I respect your philosophy of software authoring. But - my scenario is:
1. Make affairs as simple as possible (Longhorn will accept "old" fashion
programming).
2. Earn quick money.
3. Go to Accapulco (or somwhere else. Taste the life.

Well, I totally reject #2 and #3. A man *must* stick by his principles.

Ummm... WAIT!!! Let me get my hat and I'll go with you! :D

Your other half won't like that one...

NO!, NO!, NO!

I have to agree, I've used all flavors of VB since 2 and I've used Delphi 2.
VB is built around the Basic language syntax and Delphi is built around the
Pascal language syntax. With the other stuff, it's about the same level of
difficulty

If you are going to design and write your own creations, it's a matter of
personal preference. But if you want to hire yourself out on a contractual
basis. I would concentrate on VB first but find some time to pick up
Delphi. There is a lot more VB work in my area but there is some Delphi
work. Just not enough to earn a living exclusively in it.

Last I heard, softwareoutlet.com was selling Delphi 2 for some ridiculously
cheap price like $5.00 USD.

Thank you very much Wald, Fran, Bob Adkins, Bob (JunkMonkey) and Bob
(javalab). Bob Adkins you have very good sense of humour. I will remember
that you also think abot the trip to Acapulco.

Of course I agree that morality is one of the most important think in
life. I do not think about earning money in no honest way, I am quite
opposite to it.

I am not master in English. Writing: "earn quick money" I mean: recognize
quickly consumer needs - make program they expect, I also mean: do not
wait to long with your good idea - find suitable development kit and learn
yurself of it "on fly" realizing in new program your good idea. I mean: be
creator, no consumer - do not spend to much time reading the books about
programming, make program yourself and write the book about it.

My experience with programming begun at the University, where we were
tought following languages: Fortran, Cobol, Turbo Pascal. I am the creator
of 3 commercial, specialized programs, I wrote and publishe 5 books. The
most popular was: "Programing wit DOS commands".

Steve Burn, do not label people quickly. Try to understand them, try to
recognize their needs. Cynicism is useless.

P.S. Wald I will take a longer look at free Pascal from Lazarus:
http://lazarus.freepascal.org/.

Thank you all.

hello jan, you're welcome.
btw, my name is andrea (male) = andrzej :)

i still didnt understand if the dotnet is a full bluff or what. anyway
longhorn, and possibly next xp sp's, will stick to it closely. so you might
look into that world too, i guess work possibilities will increase quickly.
i frequented a short course on vbnet, and it's impressing. just needs a few
3-4 gb, language + msdn, and just three hours for installing it from the dvd
on a fast machine :)

btw, the framework is free from ms. you could write the code with notepad,
and compile with command line, but there's also free ide/compilers around in
the visual studio style. search google for icsharpcode and mono.

ciao, j.

Unfotrunately, Delphy 6 PE may not be used commercially. So I guess that one
is officialy out of the question (Wheter or not you take this into account
is, of course up to you). You might consider what your client would think if
you showed up this program code he/she may not officialy use. I don't think
Micor$oft would be to pleased if they found out. And if the are, the would
realy be a bunch of hypocrites. (I can understand Microsoft is anoying, too
strickt, ect... , but they just cannot afford being hypocrite)

I guess you will need to go with one of the opensource freeware Pascal
compilers (like the mentioned http://lazarus.freepascal.org/) that can be
used for 'personal gain'

You also might want to take a look at #develop
http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/
For a Visual Basic.net clone solution.

as for goal 3: i'd choose an other location, but I guess the 'why' remains
the same.
