Hello all.
How do I find out which version USB I have? I bought my system in FEB, 2003,
but cannot find any docs. Is there some system way to find out whether I
have USB 1 or 2?
Thanks!

Yes, it's called 'visiting the manufacturer's website' (though the chances
are you probably don't).

Find your way to Device manager. Rt click My computer, clk Properties, clk
Hardware tab,clk Device manager, expand usb controllers. If you have USB 2
installed you will see an Enhanced controller.

Ms. Pirspiration,

I recall that you recently boasted that you were an
English major. Too bad you didn't study the Humanities too.

Milt

It says :Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller." Is that USB 2?
Thanks!
BTW, what is with those kids arguing instead of answering the question?

Unfortunately, unless you have motherboard documentation, or you
installed a USB 2 card yourself, there is no true guarentee.

There is one way to check: Beg, buy, or borrow a USB 2 device from
someone and plug it into your system. If your system is not USB 2, you
will get a warning message complaining that you installed a high-speed
device in a normal speed port. (Note that this will only happen, and
USB 2 devices are only supported, if you installed Service Pack 1 for XP.)

courtney sends....

Just look in device manager. If USB2 it will state 'advanced'. If USB it will
only read as Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
SP2 is that an error? SP2 is a service pack. BTW some USB2 devices will work
on USB.

I got the advanced tryout of SP2. Seems to work fine, but I really see no
difference on my system.
As I said, the device description says "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host
Controller." Again, do you know if that in v1 or v2?
Thanks!

Your system is definitely USB 2 capable. The word "enhanced" is the key as
stated in my previous answer. As long as you have SP1 or SP2 installed your
USB 2 can cope with any USB

..2 devices you care to connect. Your USB 2 ports are also backwards
compatible so you can continue to use USB 1 devices albeit at USB1 speeds.
Hope this finally clears this up for you.

Richard.

Miss Perspicacia Tick (a.k.a Amethyst, Cassandra, and many other aliases),
your posts are extremely rude, and counter-productive.

1) This is a Microsoft newsgroup designed to help people with questions
about Microsoft products.
2) People have a right to ask questions and make mistakes.
3) This is not English class.
4) Not everyone here speaks fluent English
5) If someone isn't following USENET etiquette, politely inform them of
their error if you expect them to listen. Calling them a moron is just
going to cause them to label you as a jacka**, and they will not listen.
6) This is a newsgroup to help
(http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=help) people, not criticise them
and be demeaning towards them.
7) If they post something off-topic, politely ask them to post in the
correct newsgroup.
8) If someone posts an incorrect solution, politely correct them.

-Being rude and demeaning as you are, only makes yourself appear
unintelligent, immature, insecure, and just plain isn't nice.

-If you are as intelligent as you try to appear to be, you would understand
that attacking people, is a very inferior thing to do. Are you so insecure
in life that you have to resort to attacking people about trivial things in
a Microsoft newsgroup? Are you so insecure that you can't stop and say to
yourself, "OK, this person just did something wrong. Why did they do it?
Was it on purpose?" and then respond politely. Are you so insecure that you
have to attack people who already are struggling with computer, and belittle
them even more, thus making yourself feel like some wolf that's establishing
its dominance? Are you so insecure that you have to act like some wild
animal, and belittle people, to make yourself feel dominant and superior?

Why do you feel the need to insult people? Nothing good comes of it. There
is no need for it. If you can think of a single reason for why we should
insult people, please tell us.
