Which updates are necessary?

After performing a clean [raw] installation of Windows XP
Professional, my first visit to the Windows Update site
shows there are 38 critical updates incl. the SP1.
Recently I've noticed when certain applications like
Outlook, Norton SystemWorks are opened my hard drive
seems be being accessed solid for 5+ seconds. I've
checked for things like caching, indexing service etc but
I'm sure that one of these updates I've installed is
doing something, I've not installed an update numbered
811493 because this has been confirmed to have
performance problems on certain systems running XP Pro.
So, which updates do I really need? Are they all
necessary?

You should have Service Pack 1 for sure (if your XP did not come with the SP1 already).
You should take the *Critical* updates because they have been deemed to be important fixes.

But for the time being, do not take update # 821557; there will be a better version of this one soon.
All updates are truly optional.

By the way, I've had 811493 since June 1 without problem.
