Which Type Of Ram Is Compatible With My System

I know I should be checking the manual, but my friend
borrowed my Norton Ghost Cd which was in the same box
with my XP cds and manual, and I can't seem to track him
down.

My system came with 512megabytes of ram (DDR) in two
slots, and I took one of the 256 sticks out and replaced
it with a 512 stick for 768mb total. Now I'd like to
replace the other 256 stick with a gig.

What type (PC2100/PC2700) should I get, and which slots
(there are only two) should I put each stick in?

Here are my system specs:
Dell Dimension 4500
Windows XP
Pentium 4 CPU 2.4ghz
768mb of DDR Ram

Thanks in advance for any help

You can download and run either or both, the Bel Arc Advisor
www.belarc.com or
AIDA32 from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php

These program are free, they will scan your computer and
report the make and model of your motherboard and the type
of RAM installed. AIDA32 will even report which company
actually made your RAM.

Your friend is a thief who has committed grand theft and
burglary, call the police.

I won't comment on your loaning him Norton Ghost.

According to 4allmemory.com, my system has a maximum of 1
gig of ram. Is this true? I only have two slots, but if
I put a 1 gig stick in with a 512mb stick, will it really
only support 1 gig? Why?

If you have 512mb you should only add another 512mb.
If 1 gig is the max then 1 gig is the max.

Also if you have pc2100 you should only add pc2100.
If you add pc2700 with the pc2100 your system will only
run at the pc2100 speed. Plus you might have other
problems. Search NG posts for other ram posts.

Greetings --

If you cannot lay your hands upon the PC's manuals and the PC's
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site:

SiSoft's Sandra
http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.php?dir=&location=sware_dl&lang=en

Belarc Advisor

Unlimited Possibilities' AIDA32

Also, Crucial Memory's web site (www.crucial.com) has a database
to help to find the right RAM for your specific make and model PC.

Greetings --

Ask your motherboard manufacturer that question.

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module be compatible
with both the motherboard and any other RAM module(s) in the system.
Additionally, there are sometimes jumper switches on older
motherboards that need to be reset for the new RAM configuration.

You state your system is a Dell, why dont you supply the tag number that
comes with all Dell pc's and ask them or go to their website and enter the
tag number in the support site.It will give you all the info about your pc.

If you go to http://support.dell.com, you'll see that Dell claims that the
largest DDR DIMMs compatible with your system are 512 MB. Also, if you go to
http://www.crucial.com, the largest DIMMs they list for your machine are 512
MB.

You system uses either 400 or 533 MHz FSB (front side bus) CPUs, so PC2100
DDR would work with either. There would be no advantage to buying anything
faster, unless Dell has introduced overclocking capabilities (that I haven't
seen in their systems since the Pentium Pro).

Good luck.
