Hello,

what is the best antiviruis online update for slow modem connections?
Of course the program itself must be serious as well, on-access-scan
& e-mail-protection are a must. I tested AntiVir and disliked (along
with the program itself), that it always downloaded the whole package.
Yesterday I tried avast! and it also took long time and was not able
to restore former downloaded stuff on a update restart after logout.
And it always asks for reboot, even when download wasn't successful.

What I need should be installed for a novice user.

Suggestions? (I already thought about using "wget" to always download
the whole package, but with better download mechanism. But that cannot
be the solution...)

Regards,
Thorsten

Just how slow is your connection? . Im using avast on 56k with no update
problems , and i cant remember the last time that i had to reboot on an
update. The updates like AVG are incremental and only download new
defenitions The only other decent freeware one is AVG really (the email
scanner is not as good as avasts by the way) but many users (even with high
speed connections )are reporting update problems because of the volume of
AVG users trying to update recently.

I can recommend AVG - used the free version for a long time then got
the paid one. It is a bargain as you get a 2 year license... but i
like the fact that they give a free version

As for the updates you can always sign up for the emails that
announce the updates, then click on the link and download the file.
Run the update from local folder. Always works.

Another decent free antivirus is AVAST

Cannot understand problem with Avast. Have downloaded it and it auto
updates without my realising then tells me it has done so in a loud
American voice. (Should really learn an English accent but hey!).
Used to use AVG but it frankly had so many problems in download,
update and version changes that it lost appeal.

Interesting question!

But I'm not sure just what features would be required for a dial-up
connection that wouldn't also be required for a highspeed connection. I've
never heard of any of the AV companies marketing to this concept so I'm not
sure that there would be any differences Anyone have any ideas?

I don't meant it that way. I think, AV software features are the same
for low and high speed connections in general. But download mechanism
for online update can be more or less optimized for things happening
especially on slow connections, like minimized download size and not
throwing away already loaded but not installed packages (best would
be resuming that packages, that are loaded partially and are still
current).

Unlike the other posters on my queation I had problems downloading
with Avast!, and I was asked to reboot without reason, because update
wasn't done after downloads were not successful.

This also happend to the novice user I installed Avast! on, even when
Avast! was configured to update totally in background. So she was a
bit confused about that (and for that she confused me *g*).

As result from the answers here I'll stick with Avast! and will keep
my eyes open. (My tries with another, selfmade automation using "wget"
was not successful anyway.)

i tried avast. not bad except for 1 thing.

i was running outlook as my email client.

i set up the mail-shield to add a message at the bottom of the email to say
the scanner had checked it.

well i then sent mail to the account i was running with text inside it. from
another account of mine so i knew there was supposed to be text included.

after avast got through the result was a blank email minus any text or
message saying it had been scanned.

I have reported this to the manufacturers so they can look into it.

but for my view an antivirus program that deletes the contents of a
virus-free email is not acceptable.

the above being IMHO.

you could try avg 6.

ive used that on both dialup and adsl.

it can be set to update and install the updates without rebooting pc. it
automatically protects outlook express email client. and also outlook.
