I'm looking for a high quality, fast scanner with good software for
archiving a large number of old & new photographs.
Would anyone have a comment based on their experience or possibly advise of
good websites which compare the different scanners feature for feature to
help me decide.

Thanks, Terry

mostly prints, but there are some slides & negs so that would be nice unless
the compromise is too great

Any of the Epson Expression series 2400 and higher should be fine. Get
the PRO version with the full version of Silverfast and IT8 calibration.
Based on what i have read from people that i trust, there does not
seem to be much difference between the 2400 and 4870 series epsons. More
refinement and marketing as much as anything.
An old Microtek scanmaker III would be decent as well for prints. USe
something other than the Microtek software.

The flatbeds in your price range will do fine for film web work, but
don't expect to pull out the details in the dark end of a slide (light
in negs) or enlarge them by more than 4x for print. Those flatbeds do
not have the optical resolving capability that a decent film scanner
has. Whether you are satisfied with the capability of the flatbed with a
slide/film adapter will depend on your needs. THere are plenty of
posts in the archives of this newsgroup.

Several websites i can recommend:

www.computer-darkroom.com for Silverfast and general scanning
tutorials

www.luminous-landscape.com for just about any topic on
digital photo work

www.scantips.com for general scanning tutorials and scanner information
