we just converted our PDC NT4.0 to (Server B) WIN2k SP4 server. Since ten I
have added gtwo more servers A & C.
Do I need to set up DNS to communicate with each other or is this automatic.

I tried setting A server as DHCP. I get message that it is not allowed to do
so. What should I do.

Thanks.

If you are using AD integrated Zones replication is automatic and you can
disable zone transfers.
To keep replication working and since B was the first DC for DNS point it to
itself first then either or both A&C, A should point to B Primary then to C
Secondary, C should point to B primary then A secondary. All other machines
can point to all three.

If you are getting errors and replication is not working please post back
with an unedited ipconfig /all and the domain name in ADUC.
A problem with NT4 upgrades is the if the DNS suffix is not correct when you
upgrade you can end up with a disjointed namespace.

Also many NT4 domains were a single label name (domain vs. domain.com) which
worked fine in NT4 and Win2k up to SP3. But Single label names are a problem
with Win2kSP4, XP and Win2k3. If you have a single label name make the
registry entries from this KB article:300684 - Information About Configuring
Windows 2000 for Domains with Single-Label DNS Names
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300684&FR=1
I tried setting A server as DHCP. I get message that it is not
allowed to do so. What should I do.

Once you Configure DHCP you must authorize it in AD. do this by right
clicking the server name in the DHCP console then click "Authorize"

Kevin:

I thank you for such detailed answer. How do I know what mode I am in. AD
integrated Zones (I would prefer that).

Thank you

You will find that in the zone properties on the General tab.
