Which newsgroup is it?

I am having problems with my system restore (always says no action taken
when trying to restore to a previous point) and the security center
(doesn't warn me when I disable my resident scanner to play games).
Anyone who can point me to the right newsgroup?

Try the microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup, but before you post
get your information together about which version of XP you're running (SP1
or SP2), exactly when this happens, and what the "resident scanner" is. If
you're talking about something like Norton or a Symantec anti-virus product,
or ZoneAlarm, it is up to the user to properly configure the program to
allow certain functions and not the job of the Security Center to notify
you.

It is the resident scanner of the Avast Antivirus Program. I usually
disable it when playing any game that requires high system resources.
Initially when I did this the security center would pop up with a
balloon and inform of the 'unsafe' status of Avast. Now it doesn't.

As I told Yves, the resident scanner is part of the Avast Antivirus
program, I disable it to get better performance out of high end games.
The security center used to notify me when I did that. I checked the
settings of the center and they are on default as before.

Hi Thomas,

You might have somehow disabled notifications.
Here's how to re-enable them if that's the case:

1. Click Start, click Run, type wscui.cpl, and then click OK.
2. In the Resources area, click Change the way Security Center alerts me.
Click to select any of the following check boxes: . Firewall
. Automatic Updates
. Virus Protection

3. Click OK.

Hi again Thomas,

Just to expand on my previous post, since you've already checked
the Security Center; be sure that you've unchecked the box stating
"I have an antivirus program that I'll monitor myself..." which only
appears after you click the "Recommendation" button in wscui.cpl.

Did that check as well, when I disable the AV the center notices, but I
don't get the 'pop up' on the taskbar.

The Security Center was probably warning you that Avast wasn't current on
the definitions or was being contacted from outside to be updated. 8-) The
Windows Firewall only checks in-coming traffic or monitors whether such
things as anti-virus programs are updated properly. It does not check
out-going traffic. Here's information on how the Security Center (Windows
Firewall) functions:

The definitions were the latest ones (updated that morning), funny
enough, when I switch off Zone Alarm, the same situation is at hand: the
center notices it but no 'pop up' on the taskbar.

Sorry to repeat this again Thomas, however are you certain
you've clicked the "Change the way Security Center alerts me"
from the left margin of the Security Center in Control Panel?
