Which Microsoft Outlook program is needed just to open e-mail link

My new computer came with Vista, and now when I click on e-mail links all I
get is a pop-up that says Outlook can't be opened! The Outlook icon is on the
menue bar, but it's dead. I really need some advice, there are so many
downloads to choose from. Thanks

You are sure that you have Outlook installed? Have you configured it
(Control Panel | Mail)? Does the pop-up give any reason why it can't be
opened? Have you tried to use Vista's Windows Mail? (Internet Explorer
options, tab Programs, you can choose which mail program to use by default.)

Did you use Outlook with your old computer? Vista uses Windows Mail by
default -- the program that replaced Outlook Express. Outlook and Outlook
Express were completely different programs.

Thanks for the information, Pat. Because I hate change, I've been using my
old e-mail program instead of trying Vista's Windows Mail. I guess it's time
to make the change.

Reason for the confusion: When I called the Geek squad regarding the
problem, I was told I would have to purchase Outlook to make the e-mail work.
Nothing was said about using Windows mail.

Jerry,
Your new PC may have come with a trial version of MS Outlook or MS Office
preinstalled on it. If the program was initiated either at the PC
manufacturer or the store that you bought it from, the trial period may be
over. Even if you never used it.

You may have to purchase a full license as "Geek Squad" has already told
you.
