Hello,
Trying to identify my old MB from BIOS Release and BIOS ID String. Downloaded software requires winzip. Free dowloads of this OK?
peahouse05:)

Winzip is fine ...

... but if you use the wrong BIOS upgrade, no more MB ... you only need to upgrade the BIOS if it fixes something on the BIOS

If everything is runing fine ... leave it alone. ;)

Thanks Muckshifter,
Unfortunately, although everything is working after yesterday's balls-up, the screen resolution is on minimum (600x 800) and the resolution 'slider' does not work. It offers to upgrade the resolution automatically on boot but nothing happens. The display looks a bit grainy!

You need to install the video driver ... forget the BIOS for now.

;)

Hello Muckshifter
Tried updating driver, asked for cd, tried other locations but no go so far.

Do you know what the video card is called ... if you do, you'll find the drivers on the net.

Muckshifter,
Have downloaded nearest I could find to SiS 5598/6326 driver, but it is on my daughter's laptop, no network yet! Will try to burn a cd tomorrow.
Thanks,

Tried nearest SiS driver but no good. Another Google search produced an American forum, with lots of people asking for SiS 5598/6326. All had upgraded from win 98 to xp, so I guess it is in win 98 but not xp.

Yep, that's the nail in the coffin of old technology, it can't move with the times. ;)

SiS were/are not the best chipset manufactures and there driver support is/was even worse.

Thanks Muckshifter
Had great fun with that mb, but apart from the display problem, it will not support my hp colour printer and as you have said is painfully slow with xp. It only cost £25 for the PC100 memory. What about a new one? Tower is a little one with 200W PSU. Is 'form factor' the physical size of the mb? And what else?

XP is an operating system ... in short a 'front end' that allows programs to work ... go for a lesser OS, Win98/ME or even Linux, and you'll have a reasonable Office PC.

IF you 'need' XP then you'll need a new PC & £500 :D

Donate the "old PC" to Adopt a Rig and I'll get it crunching for you. ;)

Dear Muckshifter,
Thank you for your advice. I don't really need xp for my old pc, win 98 will be fine and I could also install Linux and learn! Win 98 is on an even older pc that I gave to a relative and was returned minus the installation discs.
I will put this pc back together and see if it still works. I am using the monitor on the current 'old' pc. Which bits are most required?

Thanks. :)

Just before you donate your life savings to the forums, have you tried the 98 driver on XP?

Also have you tried driverguide? A simple registration process and you might be able to get your drivers or atlease drivers that give a good reponse. Failing this.. do you have an agp slot on your motherboard?? a new xp compatible graphics card will probabally set you back maximum £20 for a low end one. If it was me id invest £20 for the sake of alot of messing about.

Hi Marleyuk
I am going to revert to win 98 as this old pc is just too slow for xp. I think I have caused mnay of my own promlems with drivers by using whole disks rather than specifying a partyicular file - the problem with my inexoerience is recognising the correct ones.
Thanks

By the way, what are the long black slots for?
Regards
peahouse05:confused:
Black slots = ISA cards ... white slots = PCI ... brown (one only) = AGP ;)
