Which is my master browser

I've been trying to find out which computer on mny domain is th emaster
browser.

I've found a lot of sites that recommend the cmd line "dcdiag" and
"browstat", but I can not find a copy of either of these programs to install,
or copies that work once installed.

Any other ideas?

dunno what kind of a domain you are running.... nt, 2k, 2k3?
really doesn't matter in this case; just noting a loose end in your
question.

the following links should provide the information you need to obtain
these utilities, if you don't already have them:

I may be wrong, but I believe they are all included in the resource
kit from MS for your particular environment (since I found all of them
in my resource kit folder on my local machine)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/new/dcdiag-o.asp

informational only:

2k3 resource kit:

another thing to check out (just for house cleaning and management
purpouses) is, how many versions of Windows can be found on your
network? Each one (in many cases) managers its Browser Master
function differently.. any 9x on line?

at any rate, all of the links above were easily located w/ a quick
Google search.

I know I didn't give you your answer as you requested... I do think
I've given you the tools to answer it yourself though. If you still
have probs post again and I will see what I can do to answer your
question more explicitly.

Thanks htdredneck...

Um, win2K server, and only win2k and xp pro machines on network, nothing
below win2k - all fully up to date with updates.

Apart from that we have a linux firewall/router and a linux backup machine -
but these are not really part of the problem.

So, win2k domain?

And I get the “The procedure entry point DsIsManagedDnW could be located in
the dynamic link library NTDSAPI.dll†error on dcdiag

Depends on the Subnet and the Domain (one for each of those).

The PDC Emulator is the Domain Master Browser for each
domain (and thus the Master Browser for its subnet too.)

Of course on every other subnet, the Master Browser for that
domain is not trivially predictable but will tend to be the
"highest rank" (DC etc) machine, then the latest version, until
eventually it gets to "longest time booted" and finally alphabetical.

Even a Window for Workgroups 3.1 machine can TECHNICALLY
be a Master Browser.
I've found a lot of sites that recommend the cmd line "dcdiag" and

BrowStat.exe is in the Support Tools these days (Win2000 &
Win2003 Servers -- on the CD) and was formerly in the ResKit
(NT).
Any other ideas?

Also, I cannot think of any reason why DCDiag would be of
use in this search.

I've got this problem where I can see my mapped drives on the server etc etc,
but I can't see anything in my domain when I navigate there via My network
places-> entire network->MS Windows Network->DOMAIN

It says it has 0 objects - the only computer on the network to respond so.

When I do a net view on the server, I see all computers except mine.
When I do a net view on my computer, I see nothing

(same problem, new way of looking at it, I presume)

Everyone tells me it's a Master Browser problem, but no one tells me how to
then fix it once I've ascertained which computer is my master browser (in
this case, the win2k server PDC - nothing below 2000 on my network)

Have you looked at this web page yet?

Tells you where to set it in the registry.

This is almost certainly a NetBIOS problem
(as you have apparently surmised.)
It says it has 0 objects - the only computer on the network to respond so.

Do you have NetBIOS enabled on the NIC->IP Properties->
Advanced->WINS tab?

If you are using a WINS server, does this client LISTED
the correct WINS server address there?

Can this machine ping and/or "net view \\Server" by
name?

How about each of those by address? "net view \\IP.Of.Ser.ver"

If this latter doesn't work, it removes NetBIOS
NAME RESOLUTION from the equation.

No, it is likely something specific to this (problem)
machine -- since the other machines CAN browse
(e.g., from server it works correctly.)

Also, consider it MIGHT be a hub/switch problem.
This is not likely but it is also not unheard of - try
switching cables and ports for the problem client
and powering off the hub/switch.

Do you have any routers internal to your network?

This was the solution - damn, such a complex diagnostic/symptom, so hard to
explain, so many variables to check and it was one setting buried three
properties screens deep....it took me three days!

Don't hesitate to ask.

Many of these we can see "coming" in just
a few words if you are specific about the
systems.
