I'm planning to buy another RAM to speedup my PC. Some are telling me that
putting up another 512MB is better than replacing it by 1GB of RAM. They told
me that it is more practical... Is that true?

That would be entirely determined by the motherboard design. Ask their
tech support for the definitive answer.

Bob I is right.

Another way to look at this is: how many memory slots do you have, and how
many are currently filled? If you have just two slots and one is filled,
adding a 512 MB module makes sense...if your motherboard supports 1 GB.

If you have two slots and they are both filled, then it may make more sense
to buy two 512s than to remove one of the 256's and add a 1GB. Again,
depends on your motherboard. Some work best with a pair of identical
modules.

In some cases, depends on the motherboard, 2 x 512MB offers better
performance than 1 x 1GB. Your motherboard manual will be the source for
which.
