Hi All
i am new to this and am in process of studying beginnings in networks
and would like to know which version of Windows 2000 like say Advanced
Server etc would be best for a network of 5000 machines??
Please help
Mal

I look at the benchmarks etc and see it can handle a lot of users but to
which system does what figures belong? Networks are alien to me and i am
having difficulty grasping concepts
Thanks for your input though

Designing a network is always a difficult task. Lots of experience is
required to avoid common traps.
It may be harsh to say: I wouldn't assign such a task to anybody not
eating, breathing, thinking, sh****** networks for several years.
No offence but you are not such a person. Not at all.

Ciao, Walter

Yes, all true, but it sounds like the OP is just trying to learn...not
actually tasked with this. ;-)

To the OP - you'd really need to ask some more specific questions about
hypothetical scenarios in order for anyone to be able to answer this
effectively.

Hi, Mal!

We're willing to help you, but we're going to need some more information
than what you've given us. Since you're studying, why don't you repeat the
instructor's parameters, and we'll make suggestions (although we won't do
your homework for you!). <grin>

For instance, a network of 5000 "machines" could be an industrial plant
(like Lockheed), with each machine tool having a separate IP address and
configuration. It could also be a government agency full of paper-pushers,
like in Washington. It could also be a college campus, with each dorm room
having Internet access. Each of them can be approached differently, and
Windows is not always the best or only solution to a problem. (Despite what
Bill would have us believe!)

HTH,
Kara
