I've got the GeForce4 MX 440 and I want to get it out of my machine
for another. Which ATI card would be a good step up? The price on the
9800se is in my range but I understand that it is "crippled'?? I've
been researching specs but I'm getting boggled.
Machine specs: AMD 1800+ - Asus - A7V266C - PC2100 768mb ram

Gotta go,

No offense, but ANY current Radeon would be a step up from an MX440, the
weak spot in your otherwise decent system.

That said, the S in SE stands for Slow. You'd be better off with a Sapphire
Atlantis ATI RADEON 9600 PRO 128MB, $150, or the new Sapphire ATI RADEON
9600XT, $180, both with free shipping from www.newegg.com

even crippled the 9800se is 10 million times more powerful than that
440. I went from a 440mx to a 9700 Pro. it was worth it.

Yes, an 8X card will run at 4X, and you'll never know the difference.

yes it will run on 4x, quite well.

I've heard that the 9800SE is crippled because 4 of the 8 pipes are
shutdown. Will this make no difference to me in a 4x MoBo and be the
same as a 9800 in my case or are there some memory/clock issues also
with the 9800SE??

(I appreciate the chat)

Never mind... I found the comparisons...

Thanks. The XT clock looks 25% faster than the pro... is it
overclocked out of the box I wonder...

Still, having looked at that table, a 9800 se would still be a better card
and has a superior achitecture. If you can lay your hands on a 9800 non
pro, which is a pro but with slower clock speeds, you may be able to
overclock it to pro speeds. Many, including myself, have had a lot of luck
with the non pro cards. I eventually flashed mine with the pro bios and
turned it into a 9800 pro. But getting back to the 9600 compared to a 9800
se, I would go with the 9800 se.
