Which IE version to use?

I thought maybe since I seem unable to solve all the problems
with IE6, I might check and see if I have the latest version.
How do you tell? I can't find the current Version Number listed
on Microsoft's web site.
I would like to be able to view images and backgrounds on web
sites and I've tried every fix I can find listed. It's possible
that AdAware or Spybot has contributed to hacking the browser on
my system, but I"ve tried all the restore and fixes with them
also.

HELP | ABOUT in my IE gives me the following info:

Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633IC
128 bit
This is a customized version

Tim,

Re: the image problem...
See if anything in this post helps:

Try the quick, easy fix first. Clear the IE cache from IE> Tools> Internet
Options> General> Delete files and Delete offline content. Reset the TIF
folder size to about 50MB and clear it occasionally.

Next, is another program causing this? The following information comes from
Mike Burgess:

Are you using a Firewall or "filtering software"?

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]
Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium"
"Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"
Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption
Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.
[more info]
Web Pages Display a Red "X" Instead of a Graphic
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316545 [Norton Products]

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer"
or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

8) Make sure the following entry is not corrupt:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings]
"User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"

Note: "Win32" = Windows 98\ME
Other versions = (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0;)

To check your "User Agent":
Paste the below into the Address Bar and view the output:

javascript:navigator.userAgent

[Example WinME output]
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)

I did find about 6 HOSTS files on my system in various locations.
At one time I read it was best to delete them or rename them,
then later, while researching all the confusing and controversial
information about security, I was told to download and use one.
So, I'm not sure what to do. That could have been when my start
page stopped working and many other web site stopped displaying
images and ads, not sure. When I open the HOSTS files in a text
editor, it would take a week to browse through all the URL's to
find any for excite. I used my text editor to search one of the
hosts files for the word Excite, which was my start page and
nothing came up. A couple of the HOSTS files seem to be related
with SpyBot and AdAware, but I checked the configs in both
programs to make sure they are not blocking anything.

Also, I use Outpost Firewall, and I tried turning off all the ad
blocking and cookie blocking stuff, but what good is a firewall
if you allow everything? Couldn't find anything specific. Either
way, it didn't seem to correct the problem after emptying my
cache and reloading the page.

I'll keep researching this when I have another 8 hours to work on
it. ;-)
Thanks for the help.

Well, after checking Outpost Firewall, I found some options to
disable or enable HTML Ad String blocking.. which is probably a
good idea, but web pages I visit sure look empty... ;-)
The images on the page were apparently being blocked because of
their URL from imgfarm.com. Not sure why. Boy, this stuff could
take up all of your time. I think maybe just having Outpost
Firewall blocking most intrusions, running NOD32 Anti Virus,
running AdAware and Spybot occasionally might be enough. I've
spend a day trying to figure out why my start page got messed up
and still not sure when it happened.

I did rename two of the 6 HOSTS files to GHOSTS on my system
which also might have had an impact.
Anyway, I'm still confused but I did get my images and ad photos
back.

You should have if you want only one HOSTS file (no extension). Delete all
the others.
In windows 98 it's placed in the c:\windows folder.

This is the one I use. Mike burgess has a tool to toggle this file on or off
which you may try when the images/pictures are not shows. Keep in mind that
when mike's host file blocks a picture that would usually mean that there is
some script associated with that pictures and it may be a spyware.

The best way is to block the server from tracking you in the first place
Blocking Ads with a Hosts File and AdShield. Under the Security Tab download
the hosts.zip file.
