after x-mas im going to build another games machine.

im not sure which of the two h/d would be better (for gaming). WD 80 ATA100
8MB or a SATA which may have 2/4MB.

i would of thought the 8MB would make allot more better.

Q which would you go for?

I Think all the Maxtor SATA drives are 8 Mb Cache, dont know about the other
makes, but it wouldnt surprise me if they were 8 Mb too

Well performance wise going with sata or IDE doesn't make any real
difference at this point in time. Given the IDE drive is probably cheaper,
that's what I would use.

Beyond loading the game initially and loading each new level, in
actual gameplay it "usually" doesn't matter, even an old drive is
sufficient for gaming.

The larger cache makes the least difference in gaming, and current
HDDs can't really benefit from SATA yet. If the intended motherboard
has southbridge-integrated SATA I'd get the SATA drive, but if it's a
discreet SATA controller on the PCI bus, I'd get the PATA drive... or
just get the PATA anyway because it should be more GB/$.
