I am looking at buying a SATA Hard-Disk with 300GB+ space.
Can anyone provide advice/ suggestions if I
can go ahead with the Western Digital drive ?

I dont like the failure rate of WD drives currently.

I prefer the samsungs for their quieter and cooler running too.

Too many reports of WD telling people to bugger off when they
break the connector too, the clowns claim its not covered by warranty.

I have to agree. I'm getting in a lot of WD drives for recovery.
Probably second after Maxtor.

I haven't seen a Samsung for ages. Nor a recent Seagate.

Amazingly, I am seeing a rare number of Hitachi desktop drives - the
recent models. They seem to have got their act together.

Hitachi or Samsungs. But Seagate's are fine to. never had a Faluire on
any off the brands. But i have not bought huge ammounts :)

Steer clear of Maxtor or Western Digital though. They are having a bad
patch.

I have the impression that if Maxtors are run 24/7 and are well cooled
(I have something like 40 of them running 24/7 at around 25C), they
are reasonably reliable. Coold badly they have problems. They
also consume a lot of power and get really hot, so that may be the
reason for their higher observed failure rate.

Good to know. Not they only need to learn how to be honest.

I had years ago (batches and moving of production sites means these
observations are less important) a Maxtor which is the only HDD that has
died on me; never bought one again.

I've had 4 or 5 Deskstars over the years; and although there was all the
news on the 'net re 'Deathstar I never had a failure on one.

I now have two Seagates with no probs; bought based on PC review articles.
