Which Freebie AV Is Worth Using?

I need a simple but effective freebie AV for my wife's machine.

I'm having problems with my purchased AV product and don't want to put
that on her machine until I get the problem solved. So, I need simple,
nonintrusive but effective freebie AV for her machine. Any thoughts
which I should download?

I don't use either of these, but they're fairly popular:

It's been years since I've tried AVG, but I didn't really like it at
that time (both free and "pro" versions). Some say AVG has improved
since v6. I hope so! I haven't tried Avast at all, but several
people here have recommended it, and so I mention it here again.

I third Avast, which I now use after dumping AVG due to ongoing problems and
faults with the 'new' version..

I use both Avast and AVG, both running together no conflicts.
Both scan and protect simultaneously!
Their respective icon in the tray spin etc simultaneously.
I check for updates manually daily.
I've had no probs installing or uninstalling software.
It's not a hog on rescources 70% available at the moment.
I'm running Celeron P2 333Mhz, 128MB ram.
I've other resident processes running as well (24 ) at the moment.
The combination catches a lot more than just one AVS.

I always thought that runing 2 virus AV at the same time was a bad idea,
so a lot of others have told me on here.

I also like Avast. Updates are fast and automatic.

That's what I thought was the general wisdom,. but I gave it a go and voila
it works ok with AVG and Avast!
No probs at all. The istallation of each is straight forward.

There is very little done simultaneously in a multitasking environment.
Processor time is shared in slices between scheduled processes and
system. Usually one AV scanner will be first in line for access
dependent upon installation order.

Usually there are conflicts - but I suppose having one access on-open
and another access on-close would avoid this and really provide some
added security.

AVG 7 does not like my video drivers
I prefered AVG 6 over avast though. Pity they stopped
supporting it.

I use AntiVir Free Edition (http://www.hbedv.com) and AVG Free Edition. But
I installed only the e-mail scanner and the on-demand scanner of AVG, while
AntiVir runs in scan-on-access/write mode. I run the AVG on-demand scanner
manually once a week or so. I like this combination so far. I think AntiVir
uses the least amount of resources of all the free anti-virus available.

I also regularly download and run the Avast, McAfee and Trend standalone
cleaners.

And of course I also use the AdAware-Spybot SD-Spywareblaster combination to
ward off spyware.

As for firewall, I use Sygate free edition (I used Kerio 2.1.5 before but
for some reason it stopped working properly when I upgraded my RAM from 256
to 512 MB).

512 MB RAM (DDR 400)
