Hi,

I would really appreciate any help you may be able to offer.

Is there a formula that I can use to look at a string of numbers (ie invoice amounts) in one column and when you enter the value of a payment received in an adjacent cell it will work out the permutations within the string to equal the exact amount of the payment??

Sorry, sounds a bit complicated but I have spent ages looking for a solution and am now pulling hair out!

Many thanks for reading

Seems to me that you need to use a macro routine to look down the column of amounts, compare it to the value you entered and then link the value entered to the amount that you have found. Or have I missed the point somewhere? What exactly do you mean by 'permutations'

Many thanks for the response

Sorry, I wasn't very clear in my explanation of what I needed to do;
I basically want to look down the column of amounts (X) and compare to the value entered (Y) and then it tell me which items in the column (X) that add up exactly to the value of the single value entered (Y)

Is this possible

Thanks in advance

It seems that the VLOOKUP function will do what you want. You need to produce a reference series next to your column of X values so that you can locate the target easily. Then create the lookup table as in the Excel instructions. Use the function to pick off the serial number next to the value that gives the exact match to the single value Y. This should work but again, I suspect that I'm missing something?
