Which Excel download should I get?

I need to be able to work with Excel from my home computer . I will mostly
be doing scheduling, changing spreadsheets that are emailed to me, and
probably no more. Which download should I get? Where do I get it and how
much will/should it cost?
My needs are simple.

There is no 'download' other than the time-limited beta version of Excel
2007. The least expensive version of Office 2003 is the Student & Teacher
one (be aware that this cannot be upgraded). Not sure if one can buy a S&T
version of just Excel - do some internet shopping (Futureshop, Staples, CWD,
TigerDirect, Amazon, etc)

Depending on how "advanced" your workbooks are, you may be able to use
OpenOffice:

http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-104 meg download or a CD

(It's a free download.)

It can read and write excel files--but it's not excel. There may somethings
that are lost (maybe not, too).
 
Open Office could be a good solution - the price is certainly right. For
most general, every day uses it should be compatible with native Excel files.

If those you exchange files with insist on you using Genuine MSFT Excel, and
if you are not needing a lot of features relating to group collaboration or
web publishing and such, then you do not need the latest and greatest version.

I just went to their web site for the first time

They instantly charged my bank account $25, transferred an old trial
version 1.479 of TextAloud MP3 to me, and then told me the
activation code is Not Available.

I have an eerie feeling they're going to send a hacked serial number
to me for their next act.

Maybe it's just sloppy business, but I seriously don't like being
jacked around by online merchants.
 
I heard of them once before several months ago and if I recall correctly, it
was from someone who wasn't a "satisfied customer".

The problem was corrected after I wrote to Nextup.com.

AtomicPark legitimately distributes software for the publisher, but
apparently there is (or was) some disconnect between their servers.
