For several years, I had used a free program from Nvidia called NVDVD. I
think it originally came with a video card. I loved it. It had an all
important resume feature that was missing on other DVD players at the time.
It also seemed to be able to let me skip past the commercials and previews
to the main menu easily. About 6 months ago, NVDVD just stopped working on
all of my computers. It was as if the program had a built in "die" date.
So, I started using PowerDVD 5.0, which I had a free copy of that was a
couple of years old. It sort of works, but I certainly don't like it.
Here's why:
1) It forces me to watch the (sometimes) numerous ads before the main menu
comes up. I haven't found any way to jump past them like I was able to
easily using NVDVD. When I try to drag the progress bar to make it speed
past all of this, nothing happens. When I try to jump to the main menu, it
is greyed out. It appears that all of the control has been given to
hollywood, and none to the user.
2) There are just too many features, which means far, far too many menus to
mess with when trying to find what you want. I want simplicity. I want the
ease of use of a VCR, which is what NVDVD gave me.
Can anyone suggest a good replacement? PowerDVD just isn't cutting it.
