Which driver for an X850?

I'm just about to install an X850, and was wondering if there are any
pitfalls with using the old control panel driver (511), instead of
the latest CCC. I'd rather avoid CCC due to it's memory-hogging
bloatyness!

TIA

6.3 is available with the CP from ATI's site. Look under the Fire MV
card.

Aha, thanks for that. Why do they hide it?

Well, they've settled on their policy that they support CCC and don't want
us to have the old Control Panel, so whatever we think of that I guess
you'd have to expect them to hide the CP.

It isn't clear to me what is so different with a Fire MV that they still
put out the CP for it. Those are 6.3 drivers still, aren't they though? I
suppose CCC is a "pretty" little number, which appeals to some and looks
thoroughly modern. It probably pleases Microsoft that ATI rests on the
..NET technology too!

I stuck with CP and sat for some time at driver version 5.11, until very
recently. When I went for a 6.3 driver I went for the Omega, mostly
because the Fire MV download was too large for my modem connection (my
download manager can't operate with ATI's https connection!). When I want
6.4 I'll probably get the Omegas when they arrive. For what it's worth I
can't reproduce the supposed incompatibility with Google Earth either!

..NET framework (1.1) was never troublesome, in particular, but when I
briefly used CCC with 5.10 I found the CCC itself was very slow loading,
adding so much to my system boot time (if I measure that in terms of a
fully loaded desktop/tray area), and is a relatively big memory user. You
seem aware that this is so. However, CCC does offer access to the AI
settings which you can't get with CP and a preview of the effect your
chosen settings will have on rendered video.

For AI access, and for the other benefits it offers, I am now a total
devotee of Tray Tools. I suggest that the ultimate combination is to
install a basic CP that you can run occasionally, but disable the ATI tray
application and let Tray Tools sit there instead. The ATITray process has
a footprint just under 5,000 k, which is not too shabby.

Excuse the waffle, but I think you were looking for pros and cons....?

Best, Ian (Tray Tools Evengelist!).

Get Omega's driver set that includes ATI Tools for access to all the features in
CCC without the need for .NET and that bloat ware.
