Hi,

In a local lan, can i make a domain and name it e.g. 'test' or can i name it
'test.xy' or 'test.com' or any name?
If i name it 'mydomain.test.xyz', is it then a subdomain of 'test.xyz'?

thanks
andré

In a test environment you can call it anything. You can use a single label
domain name (test) and this should work but is strongly recommended against.
It is best to use a fully qualified name (test.com). The suffix is up to you
so it can be test.com, test.xy or test.andre

In Active Directory speak, if you install a domain called mydomain.test.xyz
it will be a forest root domain and therefore not a child domain of
anything.

Andre,

You can essentially name it whatever the heck you want (
yes, even Microsoft.com ). I might stay away from the so-
called single-label domain name ( where you have, for
example, simply MICROSOFT - without the ".com" or
whatever ). You might want to take a look at the DNS
NewsGroup as Kevin has been answering a ton of single-
label questions lately.

If you call it 'mydomain.test.xyz' then it is a sub-domain
( aka child domain ) of test.xyz IF AND ONLY IF the domain
test.xyz exists already. You would simply be adding a
child domain to an existing domain ( when you ran DCPROMO
on any member server you would chose the bottom radio
button - the adding a child domain to an existing domain -
instead of the top radio button ).

There are a lot of people who will tell you that your
INTERNAL/PRIVATE domain should NOT be 'yourdomain.com'
or 'yourdomain.net' or 'yourdomain.gov' or whatever and
that your INTERNAL/PRIVATE domain should
be 'yourdomain.local' or 'yourdomain.ad'. While they do
have a point, I have always used 'mydomain.com'
or 'mydomain.net' everywhere I have been. You just have a
so-called Splitt-Brain DNS setup. No biggie.

Anyway, I hope that what I have written is of help to
you. You might really want to take a look at the DNS
NewsGroup as well.

HTH,

Cary
