i have 2 local w2k dc's ... dns points to themselves for primary and the 2nd
local dc for secondary. we also have other dc's located over a wan link and
they have also been added to the advanced section of the network properties
of the network adapter for dns so there are 4 dns servers listed.

how can i tell which dns server a dc is currently using? as at the moment i
seem to have fairly slow access to the dc's when using terminal services on
the local lan. ive tested the wan link and it is much slower than usual with
traces over 1000ms compared to 20-40ms it usually is so thats been reported.
but id like a way of knowing if the local servers are using the wan dns
servers for lookup instead of their own. if they are looking at the wan dns
servers it would explain the speed issues im having.

nslookup from the server will show you which DNS server is currently being
used for lookup. Normally this would be the FIRST IP listed on the DNS tab
in TCP/IP config, unless the IP had previously timed-out or reported errors,
in which case the next IP is chosen.
