Hi

I have two spare CPU's and am not certain which one will give me the best
performance.

1) Intel Pentium D (Dual Core) Extreme 3.2 Gig with HT
2) Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66 Gig

Any ideas on which will perform faster for a) Gaming, b) Graphics work c)
General EG Spreadsheets etc.

Appreciate any advice.

regards

Daniel

Thanks

If I can just expand on this with your knowledge, since the Pentium D is
Dual Core and more
powerful, I think, 3.2g vs 2.66G, why is that not a better option.

thanks

It would that you can use either, so choose one. Then the other.
Find out for yourself which is faster.

Problem is I am not talented enough to do the installation so it costs $$$$

cheers

A HT CPU is not a true dual core where each CPU operated independently of
the other like a Core 2 Duo does.
In a hyper threaded CPU either processor can execute an instruction however
all of the other CPU work to get the next instruction ready to execute is
single threaded.

Okay, as I understand it a Dual Core CPU has a single core split into two,
with each one Hyperthreading , when I open Task manager I see four
processors.

So if I have software that combines the cores/threads don't I get a total of
3.2 Gig, does that mean
that with a Core 2 Duo if the cores are combined by the software, do I get 2
x 2.66 = 5.32??

It is difficult to know, looking it up I get a lot of contradictory
information.

The Core 2 Duo runs circles around the Pentium D.

Definitely the Core 2 Duo. The Pentium-D is based on the P4
architecture which was, frankly, horrible.

Core for core, despite having a lower clock speed the Core 2 Duo CPU
will run circles around the Pentium-D in nearly any task you throw at
it.

Thanks for taking the time to post a response, I appreciate your effort, now
I am in no doubt, I have been sitting here for weeks, looking at my brand
new Pentium-D thinking, "what if it is the better option"

Now, following yours and Paul's post, I know it is not and can rest easy.
