A person with an IQ higher than mine, suggests that it was
probably the egg. The reasoning is fairly obvious:
Mutations don't usually happen in creature itself but in
the offspring. Therefore the thing that was not
a "chicken" produced the mutated egg that hatched as "the
chicken".
