Can any of the Canon printers print on CDs & CDRs, or do I have to go
Epson? I'm not that fond of Epson. Penny Pentangle

Depends on what country you want to purchase the printer in. CDR print is
covered by a patent that Canon has chosen not to license in the US for most
(all?) of its printers.

That said, some Canon printers (like the MP500) can be modified to enable this
function, but it requires purchasing a CD tray and uploading some firmware to
the printer which may invalidate the warranty.

I believe HP is also coming out with a CD printer (if it's not out
already), the D5160.

4200, 4300, 5200 maybe others. Go to ebay and look for Canon CD printer
trays. You'll find them at very reasonable prices, complete with
instructions, lists of which printers can do it, which tray to buy for
which printer, how to download the software to easily print the labels,
and instructions for modifying the settings that are already built into
the printer to enable the CD printing.

I've been delighted with the function on my 5200.

If you're in Canada, the Canon iP4300 will print CD/DVDs.

If you're in the US... you're out of luck, it will not.

My quick research (post on some web forum), shows that, for some reason,
the 4300 comes stock in Canda with CD printing, and is disabled on the US
model, like the rest of the Pixma 3xxx/4xxx/5xxx and others.

Yes, I get fliers at my (Canadian) door showing it with CD/DVD printing.
That was quite a surprise. I believe I last saw it for $129 ($CAD), or
about $114 in US dollars. Sorry for you folks in the US. But I suppose
nothing stopping you from ordering it from Canada, or picking it up in
person should you be close by.

I'd like to get this latest issue myself, but unfortunately I still have
3 fully operational older models that won't quit on me. It must be the
aftermarket ink I'm using ;-), they seem to be thriving and reproducing
.. . .

But I'm really not missing anything as I have already converted my
iP4000 and iP5000 to CD/DVD printing. Works perfectly on the 4000 but I
experience some smudging on the 5000 so I stopped printing them on that
one. That's the story of my life with mechanical gadgets - you win some,
you lose some!

I just checked Future Shop and they have it for $130 Loonies.

For once I happen to be on the right side of the border, the Canadian
side!

Thanks!!! PennyP

I just looked at this the other day, it's one of those printers that
only takes the teeny tiny cartridges (although, strangely enough, it
will take the high volume photographic ones). I believe there's a
higher level printer that also has CD capabilities but I don't
remember the number or know if it will take the bigger ink tanks.
Don't ever buy one of those HPs that only takes the microscopic 5 ml
cartridges, any savings you think you have will be lost within a year
unless you only print two or three pages a week.
