When I send files, some of my friends receive them as DAT files which they
cannot issue. I use Outlook 2003. What can be done

Make sure you don't send messages using Rich Text Format. You also might
have to disable Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor. (See Tools > Options >
Mail Format in OL2003.)

Stop using rich text format to send your messages. Only Outlook can read
them. Use plain text or HTML format for your messages.

I have tried using HTML format to send out my emails but nevertheless, my
friends are occassionally still receiving as .DAT or worst scenario, no
attachments at all

I upgraded to Dell Studion 1535 running Vista Home premium 64 bit.
I am running Office 2003 and Outlook 2003. I am experiencing the same
thing all of a sudden. These are programs I ran in Toshiba Satellite with XP
OS.
Now I have to send my attachments in Plain text or the get dettached or
transformed in DAT files. My colluege says this is a particular problem with
Vista. I tried to get help from MS, they referred me to Dell who will only
offer reinstallation of Vista. Dell does not support Vista problems, they
just say it is a third party problem. What a headache. Can anyone help?

If you send Rich Text messages to people who do not use Outlook, they likely
will see WINMAIL.DAT attachments. Sending your messages in Plain Text or
HTML should allow them to see the attachment properly.

We are all of a sudden having the same problem, within the same company
(different country, so external email) some attachments are coming through
as.dat, some as unknown attachment. The DAT ones work if you know what they
"should be" you can rename them appropriatley and they open. The unknown ones
wont open in anything at all. We are all using outlook 2003 (on XP) connected
to exchange server 2003. One day all was OK, next day poof...the attachments
are all screwy. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The is not true, it is a problem with Outlook and in most cases makes it
unusable for forwarding attachements as Rich Text OR HTML. This is a problem
that is not a VISTA problem as it occured with XP and now in Win 7. It also
has nothing to do with your AV program.

The problem is exacerbated by the fact that people are moving away from
Outlook as their email program, and Outlook is incompatible as an email
program except in plain text mode.

Solution is to go to other program for email. I suggest that Microsoft fix
the problem.

That is usually caused by a virus scanner at the server level.

Wrong. It is a problem with users of Outlook selecting the wrong format for
the e-mail environment to which they send their messages. If you send
within a closed community, like employees all at the same workplace, where
the choice of e-mail client (Outlook) and its configuration is
standardardized and enforced then using RTF is valid. It is not valid when
sending e-mails to Internet recipients where you have no control over what
e-mail client they use. Outlook has an option to change the document format
to HTML when sending to Internet recipients so use it, or configure Outlook
to always send using plain-text or HTML formats rather than use Microsoft's
proprietary document format.

I have outlook 2007 and it will send my attachments as a .dat file even
if im in HTML mode. it will only attach properly when im in plain text
mode. is there another setting that im missing?

Sounds like your messages are being sent as Rich Text no matter what. Does
this happen for all contacts or only some? Choose one of the contacts for
whom this happens and open that person's contact record. Double-click the
E-mail address. If you see an "E-mail Properties" dialogue, what does the
"Internet format" drop-down say? It should say "Let Outlook decide the best
sending format".
