Could have been anything installed in the past few days or weeks. And nota clue what's causing it.

Anyway's the mouse will be moving across the screen, disappear completely. moving it makes no difference, nothing appears on screen.

hit left mouse, it'll bring up the startup menu. but no mouse.
hit right mouse it brings up a different menu from the startup menu. again no mouse.
hit escape and the menus disappear, and the mouse returns slowly.

You have to diagnose somethings. Goto Control Panel - Open Mouse - click
Pointer Option tab - check mnark the option "Display Pointer Trail". Check if
you can see the Mouse Pointer now. If no, then click the Pointer tab and
change the Pointer Scheme. Check if this helps you.

On one of my PC, my pointer automatically changed to a Black Rectangle and
changing the Mouse Pointer works well. However, in my PC it was the problem
of Display Drivers. Try upgrading or re-installing your Display Drivers.

Possibly your problem was that you changed your mouse pointers from the defaults. The design of mine changes constantly dependent on which program is running. That's not a problem.

But this is a new one on me. it just disappears. And doesn't return till I hit escape.
Something LOCKS it to the start menu, and turns it invisible. Escape restores the visibility and allows it to move off the start menu.
This is a NEW occurrence. The mouse is months old. Working fine. Something installed in the past week or so would seem to be the culprit. But I have no idea which program would be causing it.
Just installed some sort of CODEC batch, and it installed an avi thing that pops itself up. I removed that.
What is a problem is installing one thing, and finding out days later that it installed it's own stuff above and beyond what you expected.

I will suggest you to try this:

Uninstall Mouse Drivers and reinstall them.
If this doesn't work then plug your mouse to some another pc and see if it
is working fine. Also check your system for SpyWare.

not enough of a problem to do the uninstall. Also I don't think the problem is related to the mouse at all. It's happened twice. And not again since the day I asked this question.
