Hi. Just joined the forum. Can anyone help me understand
and remedy the following. Built new system today with Asus
Mboard/AthlonXP 2400/512 DDR and 60Gb Exelstor HDD. HDD on
Primary as master , LG CDRW on secondary as master &
Iomega Zip as slave. Loaded start up floppy disks for
WinXPpro which partitioned, formatted & set up OS without
a hitch. When I started to load software, I notice that
the C: drive is being called E:, and that the Zip is C:.
Have checked the MS tech site for changing the letters
around but am concerned I will have to reload everything
if the partition won't boot after the change. Anyone know
why this happened and any easy fix? Built many systems but
never had this one before!

Regards

Bob

As far as i know the only way to remedy this is to format, then start over
with only your 60G drive hooked up then install os then attach your zip
drive.

Thanks for that. I'll try the drive letter change first
then, if it works...great, if not, I'll have to format
anyway!

Me too!! But, I don't have a zip drive. My XP got
placed onto my new hard drive as F:
Microsoft Article # 326683 says: "... may be assigned a
letter other than C: Resolution is to use Disk Manager
to change the letter (see Art# 307844).
But, #307844 says "... cannot change the system or the
boot".
Now what?? Help! Old Ed

A Zip drive will always hijack the C: drive. Disconnect it prior to the
install. When the install has been completed, shut down and reconnect the
drive.

At this point abort the installation (F3 F3). Restart the
installation process, and the hard drive should then be assigned C:.

Thanks, will do!

Just a note of thanks to all you guy's who came up with
the right answer. Reformatted without the Zip in situ, and
all runs fine now...thanks again....Bob

I agree that you should start over without the ZIP attached. However, why
are you using the floppy boot set? The XP CDROM is bootable, and you have a
CD drive? Note that CD-RW or CDROM, does not matter for reading a CD. Set
the BIOS to boot first from CD, then floppy, then hard drive. Power off.
Then, insert the XP CDROM and power on, the XP installation should begin
automatically.
