Bought new computer with XP operating system
Office was there in Windows 95, 98, and 2000
ASSUMED it would be in XP (well not really, didn't even
think about it)
Now I see I have XP *HOME* Edition
Microsoft Office is so universal my shorts have dropped to

What can be done please?

It is not included in XP software. Buy at local computer
store or on line. Good price compare is

You are misinformed.

Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows XP are 2 totally different packages.
You have to purchase each of them separately. Office, as its name implies,
is an office suite of programs. XP is an operating system, and does not
include much in the way of office software other than Notepad and Wordpad.

This was also true with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, and any other
operating system ever developed by Microsoft. That is, NONE of them ever
included Microsoft Office within the OS code.

What you got with your previous computers was a set of different packages.
They were deals set up by your retailer, not Microsoft. When you got your
latest computer, it just happened to NOT include Office, and here again this
was because of the deal offered to you by your retailer, not by Microsoft.

Just like buying a new car. There are lots of options.

So what can you do? Unless the dealer promised you (in writing) that your
new computer included Office, you will have to buy it.

I think the product that was included with Windows9x and XP is Microsoft
Works. Maybe you are confused....

Greetings --

Well, you know what they say about "assume," don't you?

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.

Granted, many OEM PC manufacturers have, in the past, bundled an
Office installation (and charged the buyer extra for it, of course) on
to their pre-assembled products. But this practice has never been
universal or mandatory. Nowadays, with heavy competition and all of
the OEMs struggling to provide complete systems for under $1000, such
add-ins get dropped from the list.

Jeani;
Microsoft Works as well as Microsoft Office or components thereof have
NEVER been a part of any operating system.
Many computer manufacturers have bundles part or all in their
computers but that is their doing and not Microsoft..

Microsoft Office and Microsoft Works have never been included in any OS.
Many OEM"s will included one of the two when you buy a PC, but either has
ever come with Windows.

No confusion on my part. No office software, or any other software of that
nature (including Works or Office), has ever been included as part of a
Microsoft operating system.

You know....I think you're right. I always bought a new computer and it
always had Works - but now that I think about it when I upgraded operating
systems - Works wasn't there. Thanks for setting me straight.

if the computer included Works it was probably OEM
computer. should be able to move Works to CD before
upgrading and transfer back after.

Befor you buy it.... do you have the copy you had on other
computers ....if it's retail you just need to install it
on you r new computer

don't know if this will work but......try.....
find the 'word' program in the all progrms menu and right
click and use 'send to' cd drive.

That might be a way to save the shortcut. ;)

You're pulling my leg, right? Seriously, you can't just copy the program
files to a CD, upgrade and then copy them back. What about all of the
registry entries, files installed in system folders and common folders?
Especially with a huge program like Word. No offense, dude, but...YIKES!
