I want to get a good subwoofer for my surround sound speakers. can someone give me a recommendation on a subwoofer around the 50-100$ price range??

Difficult to recommend without knowing any specs. I am assuming it is for computer application. Subwoofers tend to be not very flexible in sub 100 category. I remember sometime back Altec Lansing offered XA 3001 stand alone unit without the settelites, I am sure they may be offering something similar even now.

Anyway let me know the details of your surround (especially its cut off frequency at low end)

Ok heres the specs but i dont really know anything about my system, so ill read whats on the box...
Speaker Power- 42 watts RMS power (6 watts per channel, 12 watts subwoofer)
70 watt system power.
Frequency Response: 40Hz-20kHz
Siganal-to-noise ratio (SNR)- 75dB

i doubt that helps you but thats all i know. Its a cheap surround sound setup that cost me 50$ to buy, its a SBS 560 by Creative Labs.

Thanks for all the info from the package. From the information you provide, I now realise that you already have a complete system with you. Getting a subwoofer will not solve the problem but create more problems due to matching issues. What you need is a complete system which will actually replace your existing one and give you better quality or maybe better power handling. You specified the budget of $50-100, what if you sell your existing system or use it elsewhere? Possible?

Now coming back to your problem I would suggest you look for some very good bargains at Amazon. I would urge you to look for two brands which I have no hesitation in recommending to you. Altec Lansing and Logitech. See what you can find within your budget. Make a short list of what you like and we can help you in your decision.

Just for your information, the break up of the $100 system would be something like 80-90% going to the subwoofer and balance to the setellites. In reality the satellites basically are passive units and cost no more than 10-15 to make, the real equipment is housed in the subwoofer which as you know carries the amplification, control panel as well as a much bigger driver assembly.

Thanks Quad! i was thinking a logitech surround sound but ill see what they have.

here we go, this was a surround sound system i had in mind. Its from compusa.com http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=317330&pfp=SEARCH
tell me what you think.
I am surprised at your choice, did you not say that your budget was $50-100

If you had given me a proper budget I would have come up with a better suggestion. Anyway now that you have come up with a choice let me tell you that I also had checked it out and was very impressed with these speakers but did not suggest it to you only because of your budget. If you like them go for it. They are good speakers.

I also asked you to look for bargains at Amazon but you checked it at CompUSA which basically is a rip off as far as I am concerned when considering these speakers. Even Circuit City sells it at same price at CompUSA.

AMAZON SELLS THESE AT A MERE $130 WHICH MAKES IT A GREAT BARGAIN!

If you do have the budget upto $200 you may even consider the higher model which is Z-5300 (without and 'e' as prefix) which amazon is offering at $190 (still in your budget)

On a personal note: Please try to be as open on the forum when you need help and not disclosing your budget correctly will not benefit you. We are here to guide you and save you money if possible as well as try our best to suggest products which are better value for money. All of this is done in a friendly manner and without obligation. By giving exact information about budget and your requirements your chances of getting even better advise (and a better product) is far greater. I hope you understand my point of view.

Good Luck with your purchase (from wherever you decide to buy it) ;)

Nice looking speakers!!

I got me a good deal on a sound system, it was really kinda luck, but i have a pair of CAT speakers, each huge, taller than my waist hight, three cones in each with a bass hole in than you can shove a can of deodrant down.

That hooked up to my Realistic (Dads old) 20 year old stereo amp, then plugged into my computer makes for an AWESOME sound system, at a cost of £35 (for the pair of speakers which were my best ever bargain, from Lidls as it happens, and the cables/adaptors.)

So it's not surround sound, but hey. Its awesome. I can make my sisters pictures fall off the wall and the walls shudder with my bass. The qualitys good too. I think you can see the speakers behind me in my avatar.

The logitech ones look real nice though, they will definatly be awesome quality. I had a budget logitech sound system before my current one and it was great.

A good reccomendation by Quad, and a good choice by yourself, by the looks of things

sorry about that Quad, i forgot to say that ive decided to up the budget. conisederably. but i will look into something alot cheaper than these, unless i can get a monthly payment going on to pay for them.

I got the Logitech Z680!

One word : Boeing 747! Yes thats right that big massive thing most people see in the sky! :)

Do you mean thats how loud it is? or the size of it all? just checking
