I just put a 4 port USB (2.0) pcm card in my desktop today. The old USB
ports were 1.0, and slow as molasses on data transfer rates.

The pc recognizes that there is new hardware installed, but can't utilize it
yet. The Device Manager essentially tells me drivers are missing.

It so happens I have a CD with drivers for the card. Question being where
do I copy the driver files to so that the pc card is happy? There is no
wizard on the CD to guide me.

What is your OS and Service Pack level ?

http://www.usbman.com/USB 2 News.htm

"Microsoft Win XP USB 2.0 drivers are included in Service Pack 1"
"Microsoft Windows 2000 USB 2.0 drivers are included in Service Pack 4"
"Many USB 2.0 card manufacturers have developed USB 2.0 drivers
for Win98 SE, ME and Win2000"

Put the CD in the system and if it doesn't run
automatically, look for an "autorun" or Setup file to start
things off. It may automate the process for you to some
extent.

If not, browse the CD and find the seemingly correspondant
files to what card you have and either copy them off onto a
central store of files per your system (I like to keep all
drivers in same place for a system instead of juggling
around CDs) or just direct Device Manager to update the
driver for this device in it's properties.

Based on which chipset the card uses, another alternative
would be to go to the respective chipset manufacturer's
website seeking their newest driver... which may be (Often
is) newer than that provided on the CD. Then of course
you'd download it and decompress (unzip, or run the *.exe
file) to a location on the hard drive that you later browse
to when updatingn the driver in Device Manager as mentioned
above.

In device manager...just opt to "update drivers"
then direct the installer to the appropriate folder on your cd
