It can be invoked as follows...
START|RUN
Type "cmd" <enter>
Type "chkdsk /f" for a list of options
It can also be brought up within XP...
Right-click on the C: drive, click PROPERTIES|TOOLS tab.
Click on Error-checking.
A check can be scheduled at next reboot.
Start > Run > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and available
options.
Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot
