I would like to download MovieMaker fro Windows XP.

However, these M$-clowns on their website guide you in circles and only
offer a version 2.6 for Vista (which indeed requires Vista - i.e. it
does not install under XP) and misc. add-ons for MovieMaker 2.1. But
where can I get the basic product???

BTW.: what's the latest version available for WinXP? v2.1?

Michael

Nevermind - I just realized that I already have that on my system. Must
have been installed with some update, just that I never had paid
attention to this...

If the latest is 2.1 - why then is my version saying it's 5.1?

5.1 is your Windows version. Look lower and you will see:
"Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4026.0"

OK, but I live in Spain and all my downloads default to Spanish which is a
pain to try and understand when you only half-speak it! Where can I download
it in English?

Download what? Windows XP SP2?

I don't know if you can access the following
link from Spain but it may be worth a try:

Windows XP SP2

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.

Under the "About MovieMaker" in the Help drop-down menu, it shows this on my
computer:

"Microsoft Windows Movie Maker Version 5.1 (Build
2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254 : Sevice Pack 2) Copyright 1981-2001 Microsoft
Corporation
Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4026.0"
What do you mean by Version 5.1 is the version of Windows? It's shown as if
it's the version of Movie Maker, followed by the 2.1.4026.0 version of Movie
Maker.

Also, I wondered if there's any way to create, in the Vista version of Movie
Maker, a project in the XP format of Movie Maker so I can finish a project on
my laptop (which is running XP) that I started on my desktop (Vista).
Thanks!
Lesley

MM2.6 is a stripped down version of MM2.1 in XP... that runs on Vista. See
my website's Vista > Movie Maker > Intro page for a link, some info, my
newsletter about it, etc...

It was made for those having problems running MM6, but it could be used in
your case also.

I mean your version of Windows XP with
SP2 is version 5.1...just like it says.

It's shown as if it's the version of Movie Maker, followed by the

It may be confusing...but the fact remains...your
version of Win XP Movie Maker is 2.1.4026.0.

Projects made with Vista Movie Maker 6 are
not compatible with WinXP Movie Maker 2.1.

Maybe Movie Maker 2.6 could create a project
that could be imported into Movie Maker 2.1
but I cannot verify it.

John I read your reply to Calgovin below. My question pertains to the fact
that every time I open Movie Maker 2.1 it locks up. When you send the Error
Message, the program closes.. Nowhere have I been able to find a way to
repair the problem. Any suggestions?

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

===
(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )

QUESTION:
Whenever I open MM2 it has to close. The problem seems to be related to
qedit.dll . This dll is always mentioned in the event viewer. I'm using
XP
SP2, with the embedded MM2.

ANSWER:
There's a component in Direct Show which
caches the information about the effects and
transitions that are registered upon your system.
Unfortunately there's a bug in that component
which causes it to crash if you have a lot
of transitions and effects installed. MovieMaker
calls this routine on startup which is probably
why you're seeing MovieMaker crash.

Fortunately there is a workaround by doing
something like the following.

1. Find an application which has registered
a bunch of effect filters.
2. Rename the directory that the application
is installed into to something else - which will
temporarily cause those effect filters to fail
to load.
3. Start MovieMaker. As less effects are
successfully created, MovieMaker should
hopefully launch.
4. Rename the directory in step 2 back to
it's original name so the original application
still works.
5. Start MovieMaker again. As everything
was successfully cached in step 3 it shouldn't
try to recache things so it should continue to
work..

As an example of an application for step 1,
I've seen people run into this problem with
applications installed from InterVideo. (This
isn't a bug in InterVideo's application - it's a
Microsoft bug it's just that InterVideo applications
can install a bunch of DirectShow filters). In
this case you would go to your "C:\Program
Files\InterVideo" directory and rename "InterVideo"
to something like "TempInterVideo". Then start
MovieMaker. Once it has launched, close it
down and rename "TempInterVideo" back to
"InterVideo".

Good luck
