Where-oh-where is another PDF reader?

I just don't think that Adobe needs to be 10 megs large just for the purpose
of
READING a .pdf file.

I have dozens of freeware programs that will convert any sort of file from
your
favorite word processor into a .PDF file, and there are all mere fractions
of the
Adobe Reader.

Please ... will somebody direct me to the download URL of a freeware, small,
single
program that will display .PDF files ... and to (*&@#$ with Adobe!

You could try XPDF. It's not a single program but much smaller than
Acrobat...

http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/

The program is designed for Linux but they have a Win32 and a DOS port.

Which PDF creator do you recommend from the dozen you've tried ?
I'm looking for a simple one yet capable of converting .doc, .xls, .ppt,
..jpg files.
TIA

The cutest one that comes to mind quickly is ... Cute PDF Printer. Freeware.

You merely construct whatever you want in an MSWord document, or any
other wordprocessor for that matter ... including large blocky fonts,
colors,
inserting .jpg pictures .. whatever. Then when you are ready, you merely
use your print option; from there you open your printer window which
will show your regular printer, of course, but also the CutePDFPrinter.
Choose that, and you will be prompted for a file name to save. Voila!
Your saved "Project.PDF" file will be easily read by Acrobat .. complete
with all the fonts, colors, and pictures.

Been there ... done that. It was misleading for them to use the word
..."Windows".
Actually, that zip file contained only small DOS files. I suppose they were
alluding to
Windows because you could do their DOS stuff in a Windows shellout. The
small
files they offered were cute l'il things, though. You could render a .PDF
file to text;
you could rip all the .jpg pictures from the .pdf file; you could search out
some vital
information from the .pdf file such as number of pages, etc .. very useful.
But, it was
not a smaller substitute for Acrobat to use in Windows for reading a .PDF
file in
natural graphic format. Interestingly enough, while surfing around, I did
find an
obscure DOS version of Acrobat that provided a clunky-looking but readable
depiction of .PDF files. Otherwise, still looking for that smaller .PDF
reader for
Windows.

...or you can try Ghostview (v4.4)/Ghostscript (v8.11)
at<http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/>. The first program is a GUI for
the second one. Together they can display/print .ps (postscript)
and .pdf files. Very good and very free (open source).

Which version of Adobe Reader are you using?

Anyway, v6.00 (the latest) uses a whopping 41 MB of disk space, but if you
follow the tip at http://tinyurl.com/mf74 (and untick "Display splash screen"
in "Preferences, Startup, Application startup") then it'll be stripped down
to a much leaner 19.3 MB -- a disk-space saving of 21.7 MB, and it'll open
PDF documents in a fraction of the time, too. :)

Did you happen to find a fix for the mouse tearing up the screen on
the DOS version of Acrobat.

Thanks.

I had no such problem. The DOS version worked well, although graphics
were clunky-looking simulations due to use of PSFonts ... but, only a few
modern .PDF files were readable anyway. The copy I found to download
was an OEM installation, complete with registration code, so not appropriate
for this forum in any case.

PDFCreator

Apparently not everyone is aware of your "REQUIREMENTS" for posting to this
NG. The only problem is that the last time I checked this wasn't a moderated
NG so who the hell do you think you are Iain.

Before any of the self appointed ruling class idiots feel the need to tell
me, I am fully aware of the fact that I'm top posting. Don't like it, I'm
sure you know how to use your kill file. I don't us OT either!

Am I missing something here, or is your flame supposed to be related
to Iain's recommendation of PDFCreator?

Fwiw, I also recommend PDFCreator, though I only tried maybe half a
dozen before settling on it.

Oh, alright. Always happy to help the inane along.
