Hello folks, I'm new here. I've just come looking for a group like this.
I'm thinking of building a new computer for my wife. Where might I get
most help to decide how to do this myself? I've seen a couple of sites
that look good......are there any that you'd all recommend?
Cheers
Jim

Thanks for those suggestions. I've had a good read.............for a few
hours. I liked the ARS budget box idea which might suit our purposes
very well, but would go for a thin flat screen. No fancy/rapid/large
graphics use anticipated in the forseeable future so, we don't need the
extra video card (although I have a Radion AGP thingy here somewhere
anyway).
I've listed the components here below. I presume these are all available
in the UK? Are there any suppliers to avoid? If it's possible, is it
wise to get from one supplier like it has been suggested on one site in
the USA?
Thanks for the urls and help.
Cheers
Jim

Motherboard: Shuttle AN35N

Processor: AMD Athlon XP2500 Retail

Communications: US Robotics 56K V90 PCI
Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB
Optical drive: DVD/CD-RW: Samsung SM-352BENS

Speakers: Logitech Z-340
Monitor: The exception from the 'budget box'.......a decent thin screen
monitor needed.

I don't know about UK suppliers, I'm sure someone here can help you with
that. As for one supplier vs. multiple suppliers, I think the main
concerns are price and convenience in whichever order. I have rarely
found the best deal by sticking with one supplier, but you have to
consider the shipping cost. Many places here still charge a fixed price
per item, rather than by weight, so there is less incentive to buy from
one supplier, but overall I've almost always bought from different
suppliers.

All good

I understand. It is unfortunate there are no keyboards that reproduce
that IBM typewriter feel.
Floppy: Mitsumi 1.44MB

Do you really need this? I've used my floppy once in two years and I
could have lived without it on that one occasion.

Rightio thanks for that. I can see the benefits of selectively buying
from different suppliers.

Thanks to the ARSTECHNICA site then ;-)
I certainly can't link up compatible CPUs Mobos and RAM :)

Yes, essential as all of Wifey's MSc work-in-progress will need to be
transferred. She doesn't have a burner on her current >5 year old
machine which is getting worse by the day. She is beginning to panic
with a large presentation assignment in preparation and two more
assignments to do this year..........
Thanks for your input.

www.pcmech.com

is a good site with a forum for computer building enthusiasts.

I suggest you put together a list of computer parts and then look up
their prices and submit the list to their forum for comments.
