I just got a laptop with XP Pro, plus a lot of unwanted software. When I
go to view a picture it is opened by Corel Snapfire (a constant nagging
piece of worry). My desktop pc opens all pictures with Windows
Viewer/Fax, which is what I want to happen on my laptop.

Snapfire comes up as the default program to open pictures. When I am
offered to select another program, I cannot find Windows viewer anywhere.

Can someone tell me where Windows Viewer is located so that I can get
rid of the nagging Snapfire?

Thanks

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer = shimgvw.dll

rundll32.exe (Run a DLL as an App) executes it.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll

Visit here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top
Scroll down to
80. Disable or Restore Picture and Fax Viewer
Click on Restore

pictureandfaxrestore.reg is the file that will download.

And try this...

Click Start | Click Run | Paste: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll | Click OK

If that doesn't work, make sure Preview default is set correctly.

When you open an image file in Windows XP the default action is to preview
it using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\
ShellImagePreview
Value Name: (Default)
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}

Also if that doesn't work...
[[Installing a third-party image editor or viewer applications may sometimes
hijack the image file associations. In those cases, this utility allows you
repair the file associations for the following image file types to Windows
XP defaults:

Windows opens each file type (extension) with the program that is associated
with that extesion. When you installed Snapfire, it took over the
associations for all (or many) graphics extensions.

To change the association, for example for jpg files, right-click on any jpg
file, choose "Open with," scroll to the program you want to use, check the
box "Always use this program..." and click OK.

Repeat for all the other file types you want to change.

Richard, just rt click on one of your picture files and select " Open With"
Choose Program>Select WinPicture and Fax Viewer>and click the box " Always
use the selected Program....." Click Ok.

I clicked on Restore on Kelly's page and a whole page of registry
entries appeared. No idea what to do with that.
I then ran regsvr32 shimgvw.dll. Message said that the registry entry
was successful. Still, only Snapfire shows up and offered other
programs do not list Windows Picture Viewer.

I'm not one at ease fooling with the registry. Any other suggestions?
Thanks

So, if the Windows and Fax Viewer WAS disabled, it is now enabled.

Right click a picture file, .jpg or whatever, and click Properties.

On the General tab of the file Properties, if Opens with: says something
other than Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, click the Change button.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer should be listed under Recommended Programs.

Double click on Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Then click OK on the file Properties dialog.

Ok, I am getting there. But here is the wrinkle. If I have a jpg on my
desktop, I can, indeed, click on properties and obtain the Windows
Picture Viewer. BUT, this same picture in my saved Mail (Thunderbird)
presents a problem. It will only open with Snapfire--Windows Picture
Viewer is not in the drop down list of available programs. Furthermore,
when I right click on the jpg in my Mail folder, I do not get the option
to change the opening of the image. I do not understand why this is, but
that appears to be the problem.

In short, Windows Picture Viewer is available outside of my Thunderbird
Mail collection of photos sent to me. And so, I have to copy these
photos to my desktop in order to open them with WPV. Odd that I cannot
do this within Thunderbird....

OK. All pix will now open in Windows Viewer--BUT, in Thunderbird, even
though the dedfault viewer shows Snapfire, the file actually appears in
Windows Viewer!! Curioser and curioser.

I use Internet Explorer and Outlook Express and know nothing about
Thunderbird.

Does Thunderbird have some sort of options to set a picture viewer?

How about Snapfire options?

I know nothing about Snapfire either. Lot of help, huh?

Just a thought here, can you just drag the picture files from Thunderbird to
your desktop?

I can open a message with attached files in Outlook Express and drag the
attached files from the attachment box to my desktop. Dragging them copies
the files.
