Hi
I recently got windows vista.... At the begining it was using 10GB of space,
After installing my apps, I realized that i am running out of space quickly,
and when i uninstall a program, i doesnt retrieve back the complete space
that was used by the program...
At last, I decided to clean up my partition but that wasn't useful, so I
showed the hidden files and folders and unchecked "hide protected operating
system files" to see which folders exactly are using much space
for my surprise, all folders and files were only 21GB, but windows is seeing
the partition used space as 30.5GB?

Where is the fault? where have my 10GB gone? how can i restore them back?

Thanks in advance

Hi

The space is being used with your system restore features of Vista. By
default it's set to use 15% of drive space. There is a way to set it to use
less but that can be a messy afair using redit.

What you can do for now is a complete disc clean up and delete system
restore files also.

Right click Hard Drive to clean

Select Properities - General Tab - Disc Clean up option - Filies from all
users on this computer button - Press continue when you get the security
dialog pop up

In the files to delete window select all the boxes that have usage in them.
Click on More Options Tab Under this tab press the clean up button under
System Restore and Shadow Copies. Click on delete to delete all restore
points except the most recent.

Now you should have more Hard Disc space back.

Hopefully MS will put a gui inferface for us to set the limit of system
restore in service pack 1 when it arrives.

hope this helps.

The space is probably being taken up by System Restore files. By default SR
takes up 12% of available disk space. If your system is running without any
problems the turn system restore off see this link on my website:
http://vistasupport.mvps.org/turn_off_system_restore.htm
Check that you have got your space back and then turn SR back on and
manually create a new SR point.
