was having problems starting up outlook 2000 (win xp)...finally
started in safe mode, worked fine..then at week end when 'backup
add-in' kicked in said it couldn't backup, because files corrupted.
ran scanpst but kept freezing when clicked on repair (1 file had
problem)...

created new individual .pst files in folder on 'd' drive, then removed
outlook.pst to desktop folder and renamed. then deleted backup (bak)
(have 1 week old copy on removable)...then imported files back in to
outlook...thought i was gold...but two things: 1. same problem with
backup and 2. notice that calendar et al aren't synchronizing with
palm pilot....want to delete current .pst and redo import....did disk
search but cannot find new .pst anywhere, not in application
data/microsoft/outlook or anywhere else ...weird...any ideas?-

Why are you importing the backup?
Just configure Outlook to use it.
Does your backup PST contain errors?

i created seperate individual .pst files through file-export etc. so
now i have a folder with 15 .pst files. i thought that outlook would
recreate a new master .pst on startup (after removing and renaming
original .pst, then i would just import each .pst into the new master.
now i have all the files in...but still cannot backup...get file
corrupted message. so now i want to find delete etc.

Good grief. What a mess.
Do you still have your original PST?
If so just create a new Outlook profile and use that PST.
Never export or import to backup PST's. Just copy and reuse. Now you see
why.

Outlook is currently populated and working but when I attempt to
backup (biweekly) it fails due to corrupted files. I do have the
original outlook.pst renamed and in a desktop folder.

Before renaming and putting the outlook.pst back in the outlook folder
should I delete all the files currently in outlook? I am concerned
that if I don't all the data will be duplicated.

I am just not sure how to proceed on Monday with new mail coming in
etc. Should I reinstall Outlook entirely then import backup the import
more current calendar, contact and inbox...?

Use the Mail icon in Control Panel to create a new profile. For your
Personal Folders file, simply tell it to use your original PST file, which
should still be intact. Repair it with the Inbox Repair Tool first to be
sure it contains no errors.

Import and Export is a poor way to back up PST files. Each time you do it
you invite data corruption. Use Import and Export only when you need to
convert your PST file to some other format.
For backup purposes, simply save PST files to another location to reuse if
necessary.

The best and only supported method to do this is to configure Outlook
directly to use your old PST file as its new default.
To use another PST file (such as one from an earlier installation) and set
it to be the default for your current installation of Outlook, you will
first need to know the location and name of the PST file you'd like to use
as your new default. Then use the following directions:

Corporate Mode: (With Outlook closed)
- Control Panel > Mail applet
- Remove the current Personal Folder service
- Readd the service, directing it to the new PST file location
- Restart Outlook

my business computer is not on corporate server and uses home xp
version. the 'mail' icon in the control panel is only for setting up
email 'accounts'. how do i "tell it" to use new profile? also as
noted in first post the reason for this whole issue is that backup
sited a corrupted file and Inbox Repair Tool kept freezing when I
clicked on repair.

tomorrow i go into office and have to make decison what to do. do i
just put the original 'outlook.pst' back into the 'outlook folder' and
hope that outlook recognizes it and doesn't duplicate the info that is
already in outlook?

i am an intermediate user and am stymied by all this...also don't
understand all your suggestions because i don't have particluar files
or folders.

i do appricate your interest and support throughout.

Please always post relevant information and don't make us try to read you
mind. Post your mail support mode. Just because you are not using Exchange
Server does not mean you are not using Corp/Workgroup mode of Outlook.
If indeed you are using Internet Mail Only mode, you cannot create a new
profile. Use these instructions instead:
Internet Mail Only mode:
- File menu > Open > Personal Folders file > migrate to the new PST file
location to open it
- Right-click on the root of the new set of folders in the folder pane (View
Folder List)
- Choose Properties
- Check the "Deliver POP mail" box
- Quit & restart Outlook
- Now you can Close the PST file that you were previously using (R-click on
that pst folder while in Folder View and select "Close <foldername>
Folders"). If you have any information in your former PST that you'd like to
transfer to your new default PST, you can drag and drop from one to the
other before you close the old one.
