Where is my e-mail

While composing a message in WebMail I got a tiny window at the bottom of my
screen with part of an e-mail message I just received.

I went to my inbox to read the entire message and it is not there.

I have my web mail set to leave mail on my server until I delete it but,
when I went to web-mail, the message was missing from my server, as well (as
a matter of fact., all of the messages I thought were being kept on the
server were gone.)

Where is my e-mail??

Web mail is controlled by your ISP.
Contact your ISP for help with missing web mail messages.

I realize my ISP controls their end of the system. I have web mail set to
leave my messages on the server.

I also have my laptop to do the same thing (except using XP). The e-mails
are still there with XP. VISTA is not accepting my command to leave them on
the server.

Again, I ask, where are the e-mails that downloaded to my desk top (using
web mail). They are not in the in box and I cannot find them in any other
file.

Are you using WinMail or Outlook to check your mail? All you have mentioned
so far is webmail, which you view via a web browser, and don't download.

Whatever else you (or someone else) may be using might be set to delete on
the server after downloading.

In WinMail: Tools - Accounts - Properties - Advanced - Delivery - Leave a
copy of messages on the server

If you're using web mail, you'll need to ask this question in the Vista
general, Internet Explorer or shell newsgroups.

Windows Mail does not do web mail.

Right now I am using Windows Mail because I recently upgraded to VISTA, on my
desktop. Outlook Express no longer exists on my desktop.

When I say that my Outlook Express still leaves my mail on the server it is
because I am still using XP on my laptop. That is how I know the problem is
not with my ISP. If it were, Outlook Express would not be able to leave them
on the server, either.

In Windows Mail, I have set the options to "leave a copy on the server".
However, that is not happening.

In VISTA Windows Mail, I am receiving e-mails (I know because a couple of
times I have managed to catch a brief glimpse of them before they disappear).
They are not in my inbox. They are not in my junk mail. They are not in my
SPAM folder.

The e-mails are pertaining to my work and they are being sent from people
with whom I correspond (back-and-forth) several times a day and their names
and addresses are on my approved list.

My question still remains: Where are my e-mails?

First my question is how where did the web mail part of this go? You said
they were on your desk top as well. You have been a bit confusing.

You mention a SPAM and junk e-mail folder now, Windows Mail does not have a
SPAM folder. Are you uing some anti-spam software? That could be the
problem.

You say they momentarily appear then disappear, are you using any message
rules?

If you can actually provide some consistant information, it would be
helpful.

You threw us for a loop when you started out talking about web mail,
but what you are describing now is not web mail at all!

How do you know that your laptop leaves mail on the server?
Double-check to make sure that your laptop also has the "leave
copy on server" option selected.

On your Vista PC, make sure that in Windows Mail, View,
Current View, is configured for "All Messages".

DGuess and Gary VanderMolen are both being gracious enough to assist me with
my problem. I will try to address both your questions in one resonse.

DGuess - The web mail issue only came into play because, having set
Microsoft Mail to leave a copy on the server, I was not oeverly concerned
that my e-mails were disappearing. When I went to web mail to discover the
mail was not being left on the server, I became concerned.

To determine whether the problem was with the ISP or my software, I went to
my laptop, which still uses XP. I opened Outlook Express and downloaded my
new mail (my desktop with Microsoft Mail was turned-off). I then went to web
mail and the e-mails I had just downloaded into Outlook Express were still
there (just as they had always been with XP on both computers). That told me
the problem was not with my ISP but with Windows Mail.

I checked and I am not using any message rules.

I have uninstalled SPAM fighter (the same SPAM software I had been using for
a long time).

Gary VanderMolen: My laptop is set to leave the messages on the server and
it has worked (and still does). I know it leaves mail on the server (please
see above).

I have previously verified that Current View is set for All Messages.

Thank you to both of you. I've never had things like this happen to me
before and my frustration makes me type things, assuming the rest of the
world knows everything I do about my problem Please bear with me and Thanks
to both of you.

Thanks for your very thorough response.

Sorry, I don't know why Windows Mail would be removing messages
from the server when it has been configured to leave a copy on the server.

It's a mystery.
